Firefighter Investigated over CPR Program

Sara Brown, Boston Globe | | Thursday, May 6, 2010

The state office that oversees paramedic certification is investigating a Lexington firefighter following allegations that he improperly issued recertification papers to fellow firefighters and private ambulance workers.

Carl F. Valente, Lexington’s town manager, said in a press release that the state Office of Emergency Medical Services is looking into the activities of Mark Culleton.

Valente said that the investigation began after the state received anonymous complaints about Culleton.

“It has been alleged that Culleton, who serves as the Fire Department’s recertification coordinator, issued CPR recertification certificates to Lexington firefighters who had not attended the state-required recertification course,’’ Valente said in the statement.

“It has also been alleged that Culleton has improperly recertified emergency medical technicians and paramedics who work for a private ambulance company,’’ the press release continued. “Culleton provides this service as part of a private business he operates.’
