Michael Richards, MD, MPA

Michael Richards, MD, MPA, is the chairman of the department of emergency medicine at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center and chief of staff of the University of New Mexico Hospital. He began his medical career as a paramedic in North Carolina almost 30 years ago. He attended medical school at East Carolina University and obtained a master’s degree in public administration at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He did his internship and residency at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. In addition to practicing emergency medicine, he has held numerous administrative positions, which include New Mexico EMS medical director and director of the UNM Center for Disaster Medicine. He is an active member of the New Mexico Disaster Medical Assistance Team and serves as the team’s chief medical officer.
